These beautiful two-arm wall sconces are a perfect example of late 19th to early 20th-century French craftsmanship, with a clear nod to Neoclassical and Louis XVI styles. Made from cast bronze or brass, their elegant design and attention to detail reflect the fine quality you'd expect from pieces of this period.

Design Details:

  • The backplate has a classic shield shape, accented with a beaded border, giving it a refined and timeless look. At the top, there’s a lovely floral medallion, a detail often seen in French design, that adds a touch of character.
  • The arms are gracefully curved, ending in candle holders adorned with intricate floral and leaf motifs, which echo the rich, nature-inspired designs that were popular during the Louis XVI era.

A Bit of History:

These sconces were likely made in France during the late 1800s or early 1900s, a time when designers were reviving the elegance of classical styles from earlier centuries. During the Belle Époque period, which spanned from the 1870s to the early 1900s, French homes and public spaces embraced these classical designs, often using them to elevate the atmosphere in dining rooms, parlors, and grand hallways. While originally designed for candles, these sconces have been updated for modern use, making them as practical as they are beautiful.

The sconces are made from either bronze or brass, materials prized during this time for their ability to show off fine detailing.

Condition:

These antique French Neoclassical wall sconces are in well-preserved condition with a rich patina that enhances their character. Originally designed for candles, they have been converted for electric use, though the original candle holders remain visible beneath the updated sockets. The cast brass or bronze construction shows intricate detailing, with the beaded edges, floral motifs, and urn-shaped accents still crisp and well-defined. The finish has developed a warm aged appearance, with areas of oxidation and wear consistent with their age. There are no significant structural issues, and the sconces remain sturdy and functional. Minor surface imperfections and subtle variations in patina are to be expected, adding to their authenticity and charm.
